Thanks to its beauty and the constant and moderate winds and sandy beaches with shallow waters, Vieste has been one of the favorite destinations for lovers of water sports such as windsurfing and, more recently, kitesurfing since the 80s.
Windsurfing was introduced on the Gargano by many tourists from northern Europe who chose the beaches north of Vieste (and in particular the beach of Scialmarino, Umbramare) as one of the best spots to practice this sport. Since the early 2000s the classic windsurfing has been joined by Kitesurfing, which consists in being towed by a kite ("kite" in English), directed through a "control bar" (bar), connected to the "kite" by thin cables .
Where to practice Kitesurfing in Vieste
The favorite place for kitesurfers is the stretch of coast that goes from Vieste to Peschici.
The Mistral and Scirocco winds blow constantly and moderately, allowing us to have fun and fly with the board in a safe way along beaches with shallow and sandy bottoms, between trebuchets and coastal towers.
Scialmarino, also called "long beach" is probably the most famous bay among the practitioners of this sport, thanks to the moderate and constant winds that blow on the crystalline sea making this beach perfect for kitesurfing at all levels.
5 km from Vieste, in the center of the Scialmarino bay, there is also a specialized center where you can rent equipment and take part in courses. The center is within walking distance Oasis village, which offers rooms and villas directly on the sea.
Other commercial spots are that of the large beach of San Lorenzo, the first on the coast north of Vieste, that of Crovatico and della chianca, another fantastic place about 10 km north of Vieste.
When to practice Kitesurfing in Vieste
The best times to practice this sport on the Gargano are May, June and September. In these months the climate is perfect, the winds gentle and constant, the sea clean and the beaches not too crowded.
In the low season it will also be possible to find cheaper rates and enjoy the sea and the wind of the Gargano to the fullest.
