Getting to Vieste by car

Getting to Vieste by car

Traveling by car is one of the best solutions to reach Vieste, especially if you want to explore Gargano independently. The roads to get there vary depending on the starting point, with different alternatives between scenic and faster routes.

Getting to Vieste by Car From the North

For those arriving from northern Italy, the relevant motorway exit is Poggio Imperiale on A14 Bologna-Taranto. From here you take the Gargano Highway SS693, which allows you to avoid the hairpin bends inland and continue on a faster and smoother route.

Once you reach Vico del Gargano, you have two options:

  • Route via Peschici and coastal road (SP52): before arriving in Vico, you can exit the highway following the signs for Rhodes Garganico, cross San Menaio and reach Peschici, from where you continue on the SP52 coastal route, a very scenic route with spectacular views of the coast.
  • Internal route (SS89): continuing on the highway until Vico del Gargano and then continuing on the SS89 towards Vieste, even if this option involves a more tortuous stretch than the coastal road.

Usually, the coastal road is the most popular, thanks to the many bays and beaches that you will encounter along the way.

Getting to Vieste by Car From Naples

Those arriving from Naples must take the motorway A16 Naples-Canosa di Puglia and go out to Candle. We then continue on the SS655 to Foggia, from which you take the SS89 towards Manfredonia – Morning.

From Mattinata, there are two options:

  • Coastal route (SP53): you take the coastal road, which passes through some of the most beautiful bays of the Gargano, such as Zagare Bay e Vignanotica. This is the best choice for those who want a more suggestive trip.
  • Internal route (SS89): less recommended because it is more uncomfortable and less smooth, it develops inland with many curves and a less panoramic route.

Getting to Vieste by Car From the South

Those coming from southern Italy can take the motorway A14 and go out to Foggia or Cerignola East. From here you take the SS89 towards Manfredonia – Morning.

Even in this case, to get to Vieste it is preferable to SP53, the coastal road, which offers an easier route and incredible landscapes, compared to the SS89, which is longer and less practical.

Which path to choose?

  • If you want a more comfortable journey, choose the Gargano Highway SS693, with exit before Vico del Gargano to head towards Rodi-Peschici and then continue towards Vieste, otherwise continue to Vico del Gargano.
  • If you prefer a panoramic itinerary, choose the SP52 from Peschici and SP53 from Mattinata, which offer spectacular views of the sea.
  • Avoid SS89 from the south if possible, because it is longer and less smooth than the coastal road.

Traveling by car in Vieste will allow you to fully enjoy the beauty of Gargano and discover unique beaches, landscapes and panoramic points along the way.
