Vieste is preparing to celebrate Christmas with a unique event: the living nativity scene inside its historic building Swabian-Angevin castle. This event, organized by the cultural association "Sacre Representatives of Vieste" and sponsored by the Municipality of Vieste, will be held on 16 and 17 December, offering a historical and cultural representation of great impact like the one organized in previous years in the city village.
The event will take place over two days, Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th December from 18pm to 21pm.
The Swabian-Angevin Castle of Vieste becomes the perfect setting for this representation. The castle, located on a cliff overlooking the sea on Scialara beach, offers a breathtaking panoramic view. Although usually closed to the public for its military function, it opens exceptionally for events like this, allowing visitors to admire its imposing structure and fascinating exterior.
The history of Vieste Castle is deeply rooted in the city. Begun in the 1240th century by Count Roberto Drengot, the construction of the castle suffered damage and reconstruction, particularly during the struggles between the Papacy and Frederick II in 1242. Frederick II, in XNUMX, undertook a large coastal fortification project which included the reconstruction of the castle, enriching it with cylindrical towers and a square configuration.
Over the centuries, the castle has faced various challenges, especially attacks by the Saracens in the sixteenth century and a devastating earthquake in 1646. It was then renovated in 1559 by order of Pedro Afan de Ribera, viceroy of the Kingdom of Naples, acquiring the appearance current with a triangular plan and sixteenth-century bastions. Until 1840, the castle was an important military garrison, witnessing historical events, including an attack in 1915 during the First World War. Recently, it was restored by the Superintendence of Artistic and Historical Heritage of Puglia.
The living nativity scene in Vieste is not just a Christmas representation, but a journey into history and culture, which attracts both residents and visitors. A unique experience to celebrate the Christmas on the Gargano, immersing yourself in the history of one of the most fascinating cities in Italy.
