The Basilica of Siponto and Tresoldi's work

Puglia, with its deep roots in Mediterranean history and culture, offers unique spectacles of coexistence between the testimonies of the past and the expressions of contemporary art. An emblematic example of this fusion is represented by the intervention carried out in the Archaeological Park of Siponto, not far from Manfredonia, where the features of the ancient early Christian basilica are proposed again through an artistic installation by Edoardo Tresoldi, inaugurated in March 2016.

The Siponto Archaeological Park testifies to the importance of the ancient city, once a Roman colony and one of the main ports of Regio II. The city, after the port became swampy and two violent earthquakes, was abandoned in the 13th century, with the inhabitants moving to the nascent Manfredonia. The remains of the basilica, with its three-nave structure and fine mosaic floors, recall the seat of one of the most important dioceses in the region.

The Tresoldi Opera

The innovative project, born from a conservation need, which led to the creation of a majestic transparent sculpture made of wire mesh on the site where it once stood
the early Christian basilica of Siponto, close to the Romanesque Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, built 600 years later.

The installation “Where art reconstructs time” by Edoardo Tresoldi, marked by complex visual and volumetric decompositions, emerges as a bridge in the memory of the place, allowing the public to relate to time and history. The visual power of the work is based on the idea of making art, landscape, history and the surrounding environment coincide, conforming as an artistic development of the classic concept of restoration.
The wire mesh basilica, 14 meters high and weighing 7 tons, has become a symbol of how contemporary art can contribute to the valorization of historical heritage.
