Italy's smallest villages could hold the key to saving the country's tourism industry. While international travel to Italy may not return to pre-pandemic levels until 2023, domestic visitors will seek alternatives to populous cities when travel restrictions between regions are due to be lifted on June 3.

As Italy begins to reopen to tourism, domestic travelers will seek out destinations outside major cities, such as in the Gargano region of Puglia.

Seizing the opportunity, a coalition of village associations last month called for more infrastructure investment in their beautiful and declining towns, from rustic Bovino in Puglia to medieval Campli, nestled in a forest in Abruzzo. The Italian government unveiled a €4 billion tourism rescue package last week that included €30 million intended to revitalize villages in five southern regions. With these and other initiatives, these gems of the Italian countryside will shine as international travelers return.
