Vieste received the prestigious "Blue Flag" award in 2023, a recognition that had been missing for over two decades. This international prize, awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), confirms the extraordinary quality of the natural environment of Vieste and its crystalline waters.
In Puglia, the joy for the new places awarded with the blue flag is palpable. The region can now boast twenty-two locations with the Blue Flag in 2023, the second highest number among Italian regions, after Liguria. The new locations awarded in Puglia I am Gallipoli, Tremiti Islands, Leporano and Vieste.
These add to an already impressive list that includes places like Rhodes Garganico, Peschici and Zapponeta in the province of Foggia; Margherita di Savoia, Bisceglie in the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani; Polignano a Mare, Monopoli in the province of Bari; Fasano, Ostuni, Carovigno in the province of Brindisi. It also shines Salento with Ginosa, Castellaneta, Maruggio in the province of Taranto; and Melendugno, Castro, Salve, Ugento, Nardò (in addition to the new entry Gallipoli) in the province of Lecce.
This year, 226 Italian seaside and lake resorts received the prestigious award, 16 more than the 210 in 2023. Among the new entries, Puglia stands out, which can boast four new entries, including Vieste. These locations add to the list of 458 awarded Italian beaches, which represent 11% of the globally awarded beaches. Furthermore, 84 Italian tourist landings have received the Blue Flag.
The Blue Flag is a recognition of excellence awarded to seaside and lakeside resorts that demonstrate high standards in terms of water cleanliness, waste management, availability of green areas and cycle paths, services on the beaches and in the municipality, hotels and much more.
Obtaining the Blue Flag in Vieste is an important step forward for the seaside resort, which reminds us how important it is to promote a healthy and sustainable environment for residents and tourists.
