From 24 to 26 June 2024, Vieste is preparing to host the fourth edition of the Vieste Archeofilm, an event that celebrates the great cinema of archaeological, artistic and environmental documentation. The splendid setting of the Marina Piccola and the Castello Svevo will be the backdrop to three evenings of themed screenings and meetings, enriched by the presence of illustrious guests such as Alessandro Barbero, a well-known historian and popularizer.
A Standout Festival in the Archaeological Landscape
The Vieste Archeofilm is organized by the Municipality of Vieste in collaboration with Archeologia Viva and Firenze Archeofilm. This international festival stands out for the quality of the works presented and the importance of the topics covered. During the evenings, the public will be able to watch documentaries that explore fascinating and little-known themes, offering an in-depth look at the past and its influences on the present.

The first evening, hosted in the evocative setting of the Castello Svevo, will open with the documentary “The Champollion brothers. In the Secret of the Hieroglyphics”, directed by Jacques Plaisant. This 52-minute French film tells the story of Jean-François Champollion, the first to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphics, and the crucial role of his older brother Jacques-Joseph. This will be followed by “Odyssey: the story of our evolution”, an immersive journey into the history of man's technological and cultural evolution, directed by Sébastien Duhem. Guest of the evening will be Francesco D'Andria, professor emeritus of the University of Salento.

The second evening will see the screening of “Men and Gods. The sea and the sacred", an Italian documentary directed by Massimo D'Alessandro that explores the rock inscriptions of the Sant'Eufemia caves, a thousand-year-old heritage of great historical and cultural value. Following, “Micro – The invisible threat”, a documentary by Giuseppe Barile which analyzes the impact of microplastics on the marine ecosystem of the Tremiti Islands. The evening will end with the short film “Nobody” by Mia Incantalupo, which tells the Odyssey from the point of view of the Cyclops. Guest of honor will be Giuliano Volpe, professor of Archeology at the University of Bari.

The final evening will be held at the Carlo Nobile Amphitheater in the Marina Piccola, with the screening of “From the outside to the inside and vice versa”, a Russian animated short that brings ancient painting up to date, and “Banksy and the girl from the Bataclan”, a documentary that traces the history of Banksy's work at the Bataclan. Alessandro Barbero will be the guest of the evening, and there will be the award ceremony of the “Venere Sosandra – Vieste 2024” Award for the film most voted by the public. The interviews will be conducted by Piero Pruneti, director of Archeologia Viva.
