Torre Mileto and surroundings

Mileto Tower It is one of the most evocative places on the northern coast of Gargano. Located along the coast between the Lesina lake and the Adriatic Sea, this ancient coastal tower represents an important testimony to the defensive system built over the centuries to protect the Apulian coast.

Visitors to this area discover a unique landscape, where the sea meets the lagoon and nature still preserves vast, unspoiled spaces. Around Torre Mileto lie stretches of wild coastline, pine forests, and wetlands that are part of the Gargano region.

Torre Mileto is located in the territory of St. Nicander Garganico, a town located inland a few kilometers from Lake Lesina and the coast.

The history of the Mileto Tower

La Mileto Tower dates back to the 16th century and is one of the many coastal towers Built along the coast of Puglia during the Kingdom of Naples, these structures served as lookouts and defenses against Saracen pirate raids, which, especially between the 16th and 17th centuries, posed a constant threat to coastal communities.

The tower is located in a strategic position, on a stretch of coast that allowed for control of the area between Lake Lesina and the open sea. Over the centuries, the structure has undergone several interventions and restorations, but it still retains the charm of an ancient coastal fortification.

Today Torre Mileto represents one of the most interesting historical landmarks on this stretch of the Gargano coast.

The beaches and seaside resort of Torre Mileto

In addition to the historic tower, Torre Mileto is also a small seaside resort overlooking the AdriaticDuring the summer season, this area comes alive with beach resorts, holiday homes, and restaurants serving traditional seafood dishes.

The coast is characterized by long sandy beaches and shallow waters, particularly suitable for families. Compared to other more popular Gargano locations, the beaches of Torre Mileto are often quieter and less crowded.

The sea is generally clear and the coastline extends for several kilometres along the thin strip of land that separates the Lesina lake from the Adriatic Sea. This conformation creates a very unique landscape, where brackish water, sand dunes, and Mediterranean vegetation alternate, creating highly evocative natural scenarios.

The landscape between Lake Lesina and the sea

One of the most fascinating aspects of Torre Mileto is the natural context in which it is located. Not far away lies the Lesina lake, a large coastal lagoon separated from the sea by a long strip of land.

This natural environment is characterized by reed beds, wetlands, and shallow waters that are home to numerous species of birds and fish. The area is especially famous for its eel fishing tradition, one of the lake's typical products.

The natural areas around the lake represent one of the most interesting ecosystems of the northern Gargano.

San Nicandro Garganico and the villages of the northern Gargano

Visiting Torre Mileto is also an opportunity to discover the inland towns of the northern Gargano. A few kilometers away is St. Nicander Garganico, a centre rich in history dominated by its ancient Norman castle.

The town retains a historic center of narrow streets, squares, and churches that tell the story of the area's long history. Other interesting places in the northern Gargano are also nearby, such as the lagoon village of Lesina and the natural areas surrounding the lake.

Torre Mileto and the surrounding area are therefore an ideal destination for those wishing to discover a lesser-known side of Gargano, where sea, nature, and local traditions meet in a landscape that remains unspoiled.
