Vieste’s Castle is found at the town’s highest point, overhanging the sea. Built by Frederick II in 1242 as a royal fortress after the Venetians’ raid, part of the many castles built on the Adriatic coastline. Attacked repeatedly by the Saracens and severely damaged during the 1646 earthquake, the fortress was modified again by the Spanish between 1535 and 1559, losing any evidence of his original structure and features. It’s now occupied by the millitary and became available to visit in the last few years, during summertime.
