The discovery of the marine caves of the Gargano

One of the major attractions of the Gargano is certainly the fascinating stretch of coast that goes from Vieste to Mattinata.
Crystal clear sea, high cliffs, coves and Mediterranean scrub hide real natural works of art: the sea caves, large cavities created by the incessant action of the wind and the sea on the karst rock, the white calcarenite typical of the area.

Inside these suggestive caves, thanks to the filtering light and its reflections among the white rocks surrounded by the most uncontaminated nature, the water acquires enchanting shades of color, giving us unique shows.

Le sea caves of the Gargano they were discovered in the 50s by Michele Trimigno, a fisherman from Vieste, who had found refuge in those caves when the sea was stormy.
Michele Trimigno, knighted in 1976, then began to combine his activity as a fisherman with that of a guide, spreading knowledge of these places among the then very few visitors to the area.
Among these was Enrico Mattei, then president of ENI, who after visiting this stretch of the Gargano coast together with Cavaliere Trimigno in 1958 decided to build precisely in Pugnochiuso a tourist complex, giving way to tourism on the Gargano.

The sea has been the stage of my life, during my first excursions the visitors asked me the names of the various caves. In reality, I didn't know them and I invented them on the spot, inspired by some of their characteristics. Today, many of those names have become official."

Today the work of Michele Trimigno is carried on by his son Graziano who with his Motorboat Desireè continues to make visitors from all over the world discover this enchanting stretch of coast and the caves with the most singular names: the bell cave, the cave in the ground, the swallows cave, the tomato cave, etc.

During the summer season Desiree organizes the tour of the caves departing from the port of Vieste both in the morning and in the afternoon, where you can also admire the cave from the sea San Felice bay with the famous “Architello”, the stacks of Bay of Zagare and the pristine beaches of Greek portVignanotica and Clenched Fist.
