Archaeological Museum of Vieste

Opened on 27 June 2019 the "Michele Petrone" archaeological civic museum in Vieste is located inside the former Capuchin convent "Beata Vergine degli Angeli", near the church of SS. Sacrament.

The museum is named after Dr. Michele Petrone (1867 - 1935) doctor and health officer of the town with a great interest in archeology and local history which allowed him to put together a rich archaeological collection (formerly the central nucleus of the former Civic Museum in Via Celestino V.), including the epigraphs with ancient Greek text found in Vieste in the XNUMXth century within the Abatantuono property, the so-called "Messapian inscriptions", the rich nucleus of transport amphorae and stone and lead anchors, evidence of the ancient seafaring vocation Viestana in the Roman and Late Antiquity periods.

The other rooms on the ground floor are reserved for the prehistoric flint mines of the Vieste area, including the mine of defense: the oldest flint mine in Europe.

On the first floor the rich equipment of the “Tomb of the Elite” , found in 2006 below the courtyard of the Town Hall of Vieste and numerous other finds from various funerary objects of the Roman age.
Approximately two hundred finds were found during the excavations, dating from between the XNUMXrd and XNUMXnd centuries. BC, belonging to different types of materials (ceramics, metal pottery, weapons, everyday objects, jewels and ornaments and attributable to individuals of both sexes. Some exhibited objects are of particular value (the rock crystal seal, the gold, the silver glass, to name a few) and are evidence of an elitist social condition of the family group that probably used the structure over the course of one hundred and fifty years.

The exhibition of the finds, together with theinformative apparatus rich in multimedia elements creates a fascinating historical and archaeological journey of the history of the territory of Vieste from prehistory to the late Roman age, passing from cult of Venus Sosandra merino farms, to Necropolis la Salata.
