About 2 km from the centre, on a hill overlooking the sea, stands the Church of San Lorenzo, a peaceful place nestled in one of the most evocative panoramas of the Gargano coast.
From here, looking south we can admire the San Lorenzo beach , which takes its name from the Church itself, and the profile of the ancient village.
To the north we find the beach “behind San Lorenzo”, the coast and its iconic trabucchi, silent guardians of stories and traditions.
To reach the little church, just follow a path that winds from the base of the hill along the SP52, north of the church.
Here are the directions .
A very short route, immersed in spontaneous vegetation, which invites a slow, almost meditative discovery of this special corner of Vieste.
The history of the rock church of San Lorenzo
The Church of San Lorenzo is among the oldest in the city, documented as early as 1053. It is witness to a tradition that once saw the people of Vieste celebrate the night of San Lorenzo with a party featuring fires, prayers, dancing and sharing, under a sky studded with stars.
After a period of abandonment and risks of demolition, the little church was restored, giving it back its former dignity. Today, it is frequented especially during the summer season, when (usually on Saturday afternoon at 18 pm) the Holy Mass is celebrated, a moment of recollection that attracts the faithful and visitors.
